2ND MARKING PERIOD

  • During the second marking period, Spanish III students will be studying ethnic futurism and how it applies in a Latin@ context. 

  • This site will serve as a reference to assignments, information, and resources throughout the Futurism unit. 

  • This unit will be taught in addition to the existing curriculum of the course.

CHALLENGE POINTS

It is important for you to begin to consider yourself an active member of society.  Your actions have an impact on your local community.  It is time for you to get involved!

In addition to the weekly assignments, you must earn a total of 20 Challenge Points by completing tasks below:

  1. Interview an immigrant about the challenges he/she was presented with throughout this process.  How was assimilation difficult?  What customs of his/her native culture does he/she work hard to hold onto? (10 points)

  2. Go to downtown Kalamazoo and visit the Mexican bakery and market.  Speak with the owners if you are able.  Write about your experience of being immersed in a culture that is not your own.  (10 points)

  3. Attend a rally or march that is raising awareness for minorities or immigrants.  Write about your experience.  (10 points)

  4. Write a letter to a local politician that highlights the assimilation of immigrants and minorities in your area.  Include suggestions on how we can be welcoming as the dominate culture.  (10 points)

  5. Visit the Grand Rapids Public Museum's Culture Collection.  Write about your findings in relation to elements of Futurism.  Take photos of art pieces as applicable.  (15 points)

  6. Research the demographics of your area to discover the different cultural groups living here.  (5 points)

  7. Create a protest poster that supports minorities and hold it up for at least one hour.  Write about your experience doing this.  (5 points)

  8. Have a conversation with a native Spanish-speaker.  Write about your experience.  (5 points)

  9. Create a fun, interactive, introductory Spanish lesson and present it to a class at one of our district's elementary schools.  Include in your lesson something about diversity and/or immigrants who are Spanish speaking.  (15 points)

  10. Write a letter to the editor about your experience learning a second language, detailing how the experience has enriched your life and encouraging others to learn a second language too.  (10 points)

Have other ideas that are relevant?  Ask Profe Lamers in advance for approval and to determine how many points will be earned.

All 20 points must be completed by the conclusion of the 2nd marking period.

This Futurism unit meets the following 6-12 World Language Standards:
